I Want To See What Else Is Out There
In order to be clear about the optimal path forward for you it is really important to understand what might be the key problem/challenge facing you. If you have not already done so, answer the following questions:
1. What makes you want to see what else is ‘out there?’
i) Belief that it makes sense to be aware of what else is possible?
ii) Unhappiness with all or certain parts of the current role or organization or both?
iii) Unhappiness with one aspect of your job/organization.
2. Do you have an idea as to what you are looking for? Yes (skip to 5), No (skip to 3)
3. Would you recognize what you were looking for if you saw it? Yes (skip to 5), No (skip to 4)
4. Have you considered clarifying what core skills you possess/enjoy using?
5. You do not believe your current employer can or will provide you with what you need? Perhaps it can? Yes/Correct (skip to 7), Unsure (skip to 6)
6. So you just want to benchmark yourself and your role versus what other organizations have to offer and/or:
i) To see what else you could do.
ii) To see whether you could get a greater challenge with more responsibility.
iii) To see whether you could make more money.
7. Do you believe that there might be nowhere else to go where you are? Is this because of:
i) Culture.
ii) Management/The way the organization is run.
iii) Your boss.
iv) The department.
8. Do you know this to be a fact, ‘that there is nowhere for you to go where you are', at least at the moment?
9. Why do you believe that there is no opportunity for progression?
i) You have been told this.
ii) You ‘know’ that there are no roles.
iii) You believe that you have insufficient skills or lack of sufficient experience?
iv) Personnel conflicts.
10. Specifically, have you discussed your desire for progression with your boss or with HR?
11. Would you consider a related or unrelated role with your current employer, which nevertheless utilizes the same skill-sets that you enjoy using?
